Our Community
The Ironbound is multi-ethnic, largely working-class neighborhood in Newark, New Jersey. It is the most densely-populated neighborhood in Newark with slightly more than 50,000 residents. Historically it has been a mosaic of peoples from countries around the world who arrive in the community with aspirations for a better life for themselves and their children.
Family Outreach
Ironbound Community Corporation’s Family Outreach Program strengthens families by placing locally-based workers in preschools around the Ironbound to connect parents to needed resources. These “family workers” help boost parents’ involvement with their child’s educational experiences and educate parents on healthy child development.
Healthy Minds
A healthy mind is essential to successful academic and social development. Within our preschool and after-school programs, the Ironbound’s youngest community members have access to this kind of support through Ironbound Community Corporation’s mental health services – a quality program that is free of charge and is offered in their own languages.
After-school and Summer Arts & Recreation
For children in under-resourced schools, and for their parents who are juggling busy work lives, after-school programs and summer educational opportunities are vital. Our after-school program, located at the ICC Community Center and two neighborhood public schools, provides homework assistance, academic enrichment, and social engagement.
Ironbound Children's Center
After four decades of providing quality preschool care, ICC opened a new, state-of-the-art Children’s Center on New York Avenue in September 2007. Enrollment jumped to 150 children, demonstrating the need for the center and deepening our long-term commitment to serving the youngest members of our community.
Community Organizing
Whether it’s advocating for affordable housing, environmental justice, safe streets, or immigrant rights, Ironbound Community Corporation plays a unique role in organizing the community to fight for its rights. Our central position in the community informs us of pressing community needs and shapes the projects we take on. For those projects, residents are armed with the information necessary to make change happen.
Environmental Justice
The Ironbound has historically been an industrial and residential community where factories operate right next to homes. Bound on all four sides by the airport, the highways, the rail lines, and the Passaic river, it’s one of New Jersey’s most polluted areas.
