Senior Citizen Services

Ironbound Community Corporation’s senior programs have allowed some of the community’s oldest residents to continue living dignified, independent lives in their own homes. Whether it’s bringing hot meals daily, providing company, or driving them to and from doctor’s appointments, ICC staff gives back to the senior community that’s given so much to the Ironbound.

These services provide an alternative to an already-strained healthcare and elder-care system when they prefer to stay in their homes. With the right support, home stays can be a much more affordable and comfortable option. ICC follows a three-pronged strategy as we work to support seniors facing the challenges of aging:

  • Meals on Wheels: ICC delivers fresh meals every day with smiles and friendly conversation. Local community members bring healthy, nutritious meals five days a week -- rain or shine -- to seniors who need them.
  • Home Friends: For homebound seniors no longer able to perform their daily routines without assistance, a caring and attentive “home friend” spends four to six hours per week helping with light chores, running errands, and providing companionship. Having someone to talk to and listen to them enables seniors to stay socially connected and engaged. Being in touch also allows ICC staff to recognize possible well-being concerns.
  • Senior Rides: Whether it’s a trip to the hospital, a local doctor, or the pharmacy, ICC staff provides transportation so seniors can keep critical healthcare appointments.

Taken together, these services address the most important needs of our senior community: access to healthcare, transportation, nutrition, and social connection.
